Hi! I am Mitzie Marion Colet Mickelson, OTD, OTR/L, CPAM

Hi. I’m originally from the beautiful islands of the Philippines where I got my bachelor’s degree in OT in 2003, a dedicated wife and mother of two. I came to the US in June 2008. I live in Dalton, GA with my little family. I decided to further my education and pursued the PP-OTD program at EKU where I got my Master’s degree in Dec. 2021 and my Doctorate degree in Aug. 2023 as my way of showing dedication to this wonderful and unique profession I have been blessed to be a part of.

When I was still in the Philippines, my practice was in the pediatric setting mainly with kids with special needs until I came to the US in 2008. Since then, I have worked extensively in various settings such as skilled nursing facility setting, acute care, home health setting and independent living/assisted living facilities. Throughout my career here in the US, I have developed a passion for the geriatric population with acute and chronic physical dysfunction and cognitive/neurological conditions, and I have obtained some specialty certifications in this area including Physical Agent Modalities and LSVT BIG.

My Specialties

GERIATRICS

I work with elderly patients in IL/ALF, subacute and acute care settings. I teach them exercises and rehabilitation techniques that make completing BADLs and IADLs much easier and safer; improve their fine and gross motor skills, strength, dexterity, and their range of motion to promote safety and optimum level of functional independence possible.

SKILLED PHYSICAL AGENT MODALITIES CERTIFIED

Physical agent modalities are those procedures and interventions that are systematically applied to modify specific client factors when neurological, musculoskeletal, or skin conditions are present that may be limiting occupational performance. Physical agent modalities may include, but are not limited to, paraffin baths, hot packs, cold packs, fluidotherapy, contrast baths, ultrasound, whirlpool and electrical stimulation units (e.g., functional electrical stimulation (FES)/neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) devices, transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator) and others.

LSVT BIG CERTIFIED

LSVT BIG trains people with Parkinson disease (PD) to use their body more normally. People living with PD or other neurological conditions often move differently, with gestures and actions that become smaller and slower. They may have trouble with getting around, getting dressed and with other activities of daily living. LSVT BIG effectively trains improved movements for any activity, whether “small motor” tasks like buttoning a shirt or “large motor” tasks like getting up from sofa or chair or maintaining balance while walking. The treatment improves walking, self-care and other tasks by helping people “recalibrate” how they perceive their movements with what others actually see. It also teaches them how and when to apply extra effort to produce bigger motions – more like the movements of everyone around them.

BIG FOR LIFE CERTIFIED

BIG for LIFE is for people who have completed the four-week LSVT BIG® physical and occupational therapy program under the direction of LSVT® Certified Clinicians. LSVT for LIFE membership is designed to help you maintain your goals and stay motivated to keep your voice and movements strong!

BLS PROVIDER

Basic Life Support, or BLS, generally refers to the type of care that first-responders, healthcare providers and public safety professionals provide to anyone who is experiencing cardiac arrest, respiratory distress or an obstructed airway.
